It's Official...

I am now an adult! haha Actually...I finally landed a "grown up" job...at the fabulous AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas! Amazingly, the reason I moved to Dallas was to one day find a job at that center.  It's my dream job and I couldn't be more excited! I am officially, as of 2:10 pm today when I signed the offer letter, the marketing and promotions coordinator for ATTPAC!
I start April 5th so I still have 2 more weeks before I have to give in to the "Monday-Friday" gig...but it's absolutely worth giving up my days of sleeping in to be doing what I love for a company I love in a city I love!
Will share more info with you all when I get it...right now it's time to C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-E!

Oh...and check out this amazing theatre complex: www.attpac.org
We've got some great shows coming up! (and I'm not just saying that because I work there haha)

Courtney vs. Nature

Phew! What a day Sunday was! I woke up to 9 kids in the house and plans to go for a picnic at the Nature Preserve.  We all put on our hiking shoes and headed out for some outdoor fun.
It was a beautiful day with not a cloud in the sky, sunny, 72 degrees...perfect.  We had a picnic lunch then went on a hike to this lookout tower we saw in the distance.  It wasn't the easiest hike for sure...we went up and down hills, around ponds, and across rivers by jumping on some very slippery stones! More than a few kids ended up a little wet! LOL When we finally got to the lookout point it was all worth it...boy what a view!
We hiked back to a park/grassy area where we flew a kite (even if just for a minute with the uncooperative wind), the kids played on the playground, we climbed trees, and the kids rode their scooters around.  It was a great sunshiny day to be at the park.

We all had a blast until....Griffin fell off his scooter when it broke and broke BOTH wrists! Poor guy has 2 casts but is loving having us all wait on him hand and foot LOL
Well it was an interesting day to say the least...It's never boring at the Cadigan house that's for sure!

In other news...I went in for a meeting with the Director of Marketing at the AT&T Performing Arts Center today to talk about doing an internship with her.  I emailed her offering my services because I wanted to get my foot in the door and when asked me to come in I was ecstatic...Little did I know I was in for an interview for a marketing and promotions coordinator position! We seemed to click and she seemed very interested in my previous experience and my passion for wanting to work at ATTPAC.  Sometime soon I'm going in to meet a co-worker of hers that she wants me to meet and she said to look forward to hearing from her next week when her boss is back in town about the job! ahh!
Cross your fingers everyone!

Standing on a street corner having things thrown at me...

I spent my Saturday morning standing on a street corner having things thrown at me...oh, and I might want to mention that I went to the St. Patty's day parade! HAHA
It was my first ever St. Patty's day parade and it sure was a good one.  We got up early, energized ourselves with donuts, and fled to Greenville Ave. along with half of Dallas. You could spot the green from a mile away...it was awesome. lol
Parker and I dressed as "twins" from our matching layered shirts and jeans, to our brown loafers, to the beads we wore, even down to the tiny silver chain I had on that she just had to match (which left Patti searching at the last minute as we're loading up the car for a similar tiny silver chain for Parker to wear).
We whistled and screamed and waved and had an absolute ball as we watched the bright green floats (and the occasional left over mardi gras float) drive by.  It was a beautiful sunny morning, and I even got my first sunburn of the year. :(
It was a great day overall.  After the parade we packed up with a ton of Steve's cousins and went to eat Irish Stew and party for the rest of the afternoon.  What a fantastic way to start off spring break!
Friday night I worked the TX Ballet Theatre's Romeo and Juliet at ATTPAC.  It was the first professional ballet I've seen live aside from the Nutcracker...and boy was it beautiful! Truly talented dancers, elaborate sets, and amazing costumes...it was a fun night indeed!  I truly believe Romeo and Juliet is the ultimate story of the importance of effective communication...if only Romeo would have received that letter explaining it all!

Looking forward to the rest of spring break...Patti's brother and his family from Kingwood are coming in town and we have lots of fun planned.  Hope you all have a fabulous week!

I'm So Excited...and I Just Can't Hide it!

THE POINTER SISTERS CONCERT!!
What a BLAST! I don't even know where to begin....but I'll try.
When I got to the theatre and went to sign in I saw "Courtney King - Backstage" I was like...what?! no way! I found the other 2 people who were assigned backstage and none of us knew what we were doing but we were so excited! Finally our supervisor came and got us and led us backstage. (mini freak-out! it was so awesome!) The backstage area first off, is huge! I'm talking enormous! Five times the size of the Julie Roger's backstage easily.  It was also decorated for a party...tables and chairs, with beautiful flower arrangements and glass vases full of jelly beans, a bar, caterers walking around, just beautiful, it was next to the set for the concert and you could see out into the opera house.  So very very cool.  So then I was told that there was a VIP party back here and that my job was to mingle with guests and help them with anything they need...how awesome! I can do that! So for an hour and a half before the show started I mingled with guests, directed them to the bar for yet another drink lol, and gave mini tours of backstage.  It was so much fun! One of the other ushers showed me the "signing wall" where all of the performers who play at the theatre sign their names...it was a huge white wall the length of half a football field with name after name of the famous people who have been there...and this place has only been open since October! So....he took my picture! :) This is me with the cast of South Pacific and Billy Crystal. ahh!
So after we cleared out the backstage area and the guests took their seats we all found ourselves a seat as well and got ready to enjoy the show.  It was Ebby Halliday's birthday...her 99th birthday! I met her backstage, she's so cute and very nice and still gets around like she's 75.  We all sang happy birthday to her and she stood up and said "i'm so excited...and I just can't hide it" lol. It was hilarious but so sweet.  Next came...you betcha...the POINTER SISTERS! They were fantastic and all of us ushers got in the aisles and danced and sang and just had a ball!
There were a group of 10 ladies sitting in a box who all had boas and light up glasses.  They were hilarious and had such a good time and really brought the energy of the rest of the crowd up.  Before the show started they held a live auction and 2 ladies bid $6,000 to come up on stage with the Pointer Sisters and perform with them and meet them afterward.  It was so funny!
Anyway, the concert was a blast.  I'm so glad I got to work it and had such a good time.  :)

A Very Merry Un-Birthday to You!

So last week I got to play "high school science teacher."  I taught biology (which I actually remembered a lot of and was able to help the students) and chemistry (which I remembered none of).  It was actually a fun week.  I had a good group of students and we got all our work done and then had time to play some of my word games.  I get the "pun of the day" emailed to me each morning and I always put it on the board under my name and the students always love them.  They're corny, yes, but you'll laugh nonetheless.
THE BOY QUIT DATING THE TELEPHONE OPERATOR BECAUSE HE FELT DISCONNECTED...BESIDES, SHE HAD TOO MANY HANGUPS.

Thursday night was.....ALICE IN WONDERLAND! at midnight. :) That was an experience all on its own! There were tons of people there, and many of them were dressed up like characters from the movie.  It was hilarious.  I saw it in 3D which made it 10x more awesome.  The movie was fantastic, of course.  It followed Lewis Carroll's books very closely and incorporated more of the original crazy nonsense stuff he wrote than the Disney Alice in Wonderland did.  Plus, everything is better with Johnny Depp in it! lol

Friday was Aunt Betty's birthday and to celebrate we went to this tiny little place called Al's Steakhouse...but when you walk in, it's no hole in the wall! It's very modern and contemporary styled and the food...well, let's just say it's the best steak I ever had! I got the 8oz filet mignon and it was huge! I had the rest for lunch the next day...but so so tender you could cut it with a fork, and cooked to a perfect medium.  mmm..mmm...good!
Aunt Betty wanted our family's chicken spaghetti recipe for the longest time so for her birthday I gave it to her, and she loved it.  I think it came out really cute too!

Saturday Parker had a birthday party to go to at Sweet 'n Sassy...which is like Libby Lu, where you get your hair, nails, and makeup done and dress up in fancy clothes and strut your stuff on the runway with Hannah Montana blaring in the background...in other words, a little girl's dream! It was in Southlake (near Fort Worth) where they have this huge town square shopping center.  It also happened to be a beautiful day and I got to wear a dress and flip flops for the first time this year.  So we dropped off Parker and Patti, Aunt Betty, and I shopped around the outdoor mall.  My favorite part was the amazing pistachio italian ice cream I ate :) It was a fun day all around, good shopping, good food, good company, great weather...we're already planning on going back in June for the art festival there.

online portfolio

Just one more thing...I re-vamped my online portfolio...the other site sponsor wasn't working out for me...so here's my new address:

courtneyking.carbonmade.com

I'm slowly but surely adding my portfolio pieces to the page so that I can hand out the web address to potential employers before I get the chance to bring in my portfolio.  Let's hope it works :)

Math, Violins, and Cake Balls

Well last week went by in a blur...I taught high school math for 3 days last week and actually had a blast.  I had a good group of students and they were more than eager to do their work when I told them that after they finished the assignment we could do some brain teasers...you'd be surprised how many 16 yr old boys sat on the floor right under the board waiting for me to write the next one for them to figure out. lol it was like teaching a 3rd grade class.  Nevertheless, we had fun.  Here's one for you all:
Everybody wants me
I am not something you can see or touch
I mean different things to different people
I am an achievement
I am ____________

Thursday night I worked the DBR concert at the theatre.  Daniel is a violinist in a very non-traditional sort of way.  He plays classical violin, electric violin, and can even make it sound like a drum when he beats the bow on the strings.  It was a benefit concert for Haiti and an actor from New York read "Darwin's Meditation: For the people of Lincoln" which is a short story/poem written by Darwin about the people in Haiti at the time Lincoln was president and freed the slaves.  It was interesting.

Sunday me and Patti went to Cindy's jewelry party.  It was a cookie lee party and I bought a beautiful new necklace.  More importantly though, is the fact that I made red velvet cupcakes and strawberry cake balls to bring to the party.  They turned out delicious and everyone loved them! I think they kinda looked like easter eggs in the green and white liners so me and Patti decided we should make some for Easter. :)
Let's talk about the olympic closing ceremony for a second...
Was anyone else as disappointed as me? The opening was fascinating with the cool visuals and great performers...but the closing...not so much.  Seriously Canada...giant beavers? Opera singers? Giant maple leaves? Cardboard hockey players? not feeling it.

As far as this week goes...tomorrow I'm headed up to the theatre to fill out paperwork so I can become a paid ticket taker :) woo hoo and I was supposed to work the Queen Latifah concert tomorrow night but it was cancelled....we're all pretty bummed.  Teaching high school science the rest of the week, going to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D, and celebrating Aunt Betty's birthday this weekend...looks to be a great rest of the week!
